Why the RMB Latitudes Art Fair is the city's most welcoming creative event
If there’s one event that proves art is for everyone, it’s the RMB Latitudes Art Fair. Taking place from 23 to 25 May at Johannesburg’s lush Shepstone Gardens, this standout event is more than just an art exhibition — it’s a celebration of African creativity in a setting that feels vibrant, inviting, and full of soul.
HOT 102.7FM’s Ursula Chikane, who attended last year and is proudly returning this week, describes it best:
“The art was amazing and the vibe was incredible!”
In conversation with Ursula, co-founder and director Lucy MacGarry explained that RMB Latitudes was created as a response to traditional art fairs that often feel rigid and unapproachable. “We wanted to create something unique — outdoors, full of light, energy, and joy. A space where everyone feels welcome, no matter their knowledge of art.”
This year’s theme, Co-Production, leans into collaboration — with more than 300 African artists and 70 exhibitors from across the continent showcasing work that sparks conversation and connection. The fair also spotlights Botswana’s contemporary art scene, celebrates independent artists, and explores pressing topics like climate change in a powerful outdoor installation titled Art for a Warming World.
There’s something for every kind of art lover:
A kids’ area exploring eco-art and creativity
A hologram installation by renowned artist Mary Sibande
A retrospective project honouring unsung African talent
A design section filled with beautiful, functional pieces to take home
For those worried they’ll “break the bank,” Ursula joked, “I’m going to personally hold Lucy responsible when I’m on bread and water for three years!” — but that’s just how irresistible the art (and design!) is.
Tickets are available via latitudesartfair.com, and the fair runs a park-and-ride from Old Eds in Houghton, with Lexus shuttles ferrying visitors to the venue.
Whether you’re an art enthusiast or just curious, RMB Latitudes offers a warm, exciting gateway into the world of African contemporary art — no velvet ropes, just open arms.
